Student Renting Challenges seen from a Parents View.

1st April 2026

As a parent to a university student, one of the most stressful activities has been to find a place to live. We decided to start with student accommodations (about 12 sqm with shared kitchen and living space), this was great and looked really nice, but the place quickly turned into a mess where a number of people didn't keep the common areas clean, left all their old food and stuff when they moved out which made the place a bit grotty after some time. It is one of the challenges when you share with 15-20 other people on the same floor. This was however one of the nicer options available at her location.

After a year she wanted to move in with a friend and started to look for a place. She was out late, which meant she couldn't find a great place to live. The situation became a nightmare for all of us and we ended up with short-term lease until we found a flat after a number of months looking. This taught us a very important lesson... start your search for accommodation early. We have friends where they singed up a year ahead of the coming year just to make sure they had a place. The access to a place to live, adding a nice place to live is almost impossible to find unless you plan ahead and seek advice from people that have been through this before.

No need to take my word for it... just read the following articles from 2022. The situation is reflected all over the UK.
